Volunteer Information
Each year student volunteers provide essential support to the IEEE VisWeek 2009 Conference. The conference depends on student volunteers to staff the various conference events and special purpose conference rooms. Their enthusiastic participation enhances the conference experience for all the attendees.
Student Volunteers benefit by observing first-hand the latest advances in visualization, hearing and meeting world-class as well as next-generation visualization professionals from around the world, and building a network of research colleagues.
The Student Volunteer Program is looking for reliable, hard working and enthusiastic student volunteers to help us create a great experience and a premier conference. For those who would like to participate in the conference as a student volunteer, an application form will be available from this page by March 1st.
QualificationsApplicants must be enrolled as full- or part-time undergraduate or graduate students during the 2009 academic year. Selected applications will be requested to provide proof of enrollment.
Selection GuidelinesEvery year the conference receives a lot of worthy student volunteer applications, but the number of positions available is limited. The following considerations will influence selections:
- Selection for presentation at IEEE Visualization Conference, IEEE InfoVis Conference or IEEE VAST Symposium.
- Success as student volunteer at previous IEEE Visualization conference.
- Preference is given to PhD, then masters, then undergraduate students though we encourage everyone to apply.
- The number of volunteers from each institution/research group may be limited to ensure broad participation.
The application period for student volunteers has ended and Student Volunteer applicants are currently undergoing review. Applicants will be notified within a short time concerning their admission into the Student Volunteer Program. In addition, some students will be put on a wait list in case positions become available.
RegistrationThe registration period for student volunteers will be held one or two weeks after the notification of acceptance. A fee of approximately $110 USD is expected to be charged at the moment of registration. The fee goes towards the hotel charges for the students that stay at the student volunteer's hotel. For individuals that have other hotel arrangements, the fee will be refunded after VisWeek 09 has ended.
Application ExpensesIn exchange for approximately 22 hours of work, student volunteers will receive many benefits:
- Free conferences/symposium registration.
- Tickets to receptions.
- A volunteer thank-you party.
- A majority of your accommodation costs at a student volunteers hotel selected by the conference committee.
Note: A fee of approximately $110 USD will be charged (as explained above).
Student Volunteer's HotelThe student volunteer's hotel is usually selected by the conference committee and it is located a few blocks from the conference venue. Student volunteers are free to make different accommodation arrangements. However, the student volunteer's hotel generally offers a significant discount from the standard hotel rates.
