Dr. John D. Prange (ARDA) and Jon Dale (NIMA)

Monday, October 28, 2002, 5:45PM-6:30PM
Plaza Ballroom, Park Plaza Hotel, Boston

ARDA (Advanced Research and Development Activity) of the Intelligence Community established the Geospatial Intelligence Information Visualization Program (GI2Vis) to foster research & development in information visualization relevant to the work of the Intelligence Community. ARDA envisions GI2Vis as a three-phased program with each phase having a two-year duration and treated as a separate solicitation. Phase I is nearing completion while Phase II has just started.

Areas of interest of GI2Vis Phase I were:

  • Mission specific visualization
  • Visual presentation of alternative scenarios
  • Visual correlation if objects and events
  • Tacit knowledge and abstract data visualization.

In GI2Vis Phase II, we will focus on the following issues:

  • Integration & representation of disparate & large information sources
  • Maximizing visualization effectiveness and facilitating visualization use
  • Visualization of tacit knowledge

This talk will describe the GI2Vis R&D Program, its challenges to the information visualization community and highlight currently funded projects that are addressing these challenges.
