Volunteer Information

The application period for Student Volunteers is now closed. The committee is now reviewing applications and will be contacting selectees shortly. We thank all those who applied.

Each year student volunteers provide essential support to the annual IEEE Visualization Conference. The conference depends on student volunteers to staff the various conference events and special purpose conference rooms. Their enthusiastic participation enhances the conference experience for all the attendees.

Student volunteers benefit by observing first-hand the latest advances in visualization, hearing and meeting world-class as well as next-generation visualization professionals from around the world, and building a network of research colleagues.

The Student Volunteer Program is looking for reliable, hard working and enthusiastic student volunteers to help us create a great experience and a premier conference. If you are a visualization enthusiast and would like to take part in the conference as a student volunteer, you will need to fill out an application form (coming soon).

Qualifications

Applicants must be enrolled as full- or part-time undergraduate or graduate students during the fall of 2006. Selected applications will be requested to provide proof of enrollment.

Selection Guidelines

Every year the conference receives a lot of worthy student volunteer applications, but the number of positions available is limited. The following considerations will influence selections:

  • Selection for presentation at IEEE Vis 2006 Conference or associated symposia.
  • Previous success as an IEEE Vis volunteer.

The number of volunteers from each institution/research group may be limited to ensure broad participation.

Deadline

The deadline for Student Volunteers applications is Friday, June 30th, 2006. Deadline extended!

Notification of Acceptance

Applications will be reviewed after the submission deadline has passed. Applicants will be notified within a short time concerning their admission into the Student Volunteer Program. In addition, some students will be put on a waitlist in case positions become available.

Student Volunteer Expenses

In exchange for 22 hours of work, student volunteers will receive many benefits including

  • Free conference/symposium registration.
  • Tickets to receptions.
  • Part of your accommodation costs (details below).
  • A volunteer thank-you party.

You have the option of arranging your own accommodation, or using hotel rooms arranged by the conference. In the latter case, the conference pays for part of the accommodation costs. You will share a room with one or two other volunteers.

Student volunteers are responsible for the remainder of their accommodation cost as well as their meals and travel to and from Baltimore. A deposit ($100.00 USD last year) will be required as registration cost. The deposit will be used to pay the portion of your accommodation bill if you stay at the hotel rooms arranged by the conference. Otherwise, the deposit will be refunded to you at the end of the conference.
