VIS SESSIONS
  Overview & Topics

Welcome to IEEE Visualization 2004, the 15th international conference on visualization innovations and their applications! You have an exciting selection of technical forums at the IEEE Visualization conference and the symposia for Information Visualization and Volume Visualization.

This year we reflect upon our rich 15 year history and look forward to issues of relevance in the future. The visualization field is becoming a recognized technology impacting all avenues of life. Our invited speakers offer perspectives to guide your research, applications, and commercial opportunities.

This year the technical community offers workshops and tutorials for dedicated learning. This year the papers offer an integrated selection of outstanding research contributions and creative application papers. The panels discuss some of the most pressing current topics. The posters allow for very current results to be presented in informal interactive sessions. For the first time this year, a Visualization Contest will be held. These combined with our exhibitors, Interactive Demonstrations Laboratory, and Bird of a Feather sessions provide you the best of Visualization 2004 in the live music capital of the world.

Do not forget to use the receptions and breaks as time for talking to your peers and colleagues. From the government program managers to the venture community, we come to meet each other and learn.

Thank you for coming, and enjoy the conference!

Vis 2004 is the premier forum for visualization advances in science and engineering for academia, government, and industry. This event brings together researchers and practitioners with a shared interest in techniques, tools, and technology. We invite you to participate by submitting your original research and joining us in Austin, Texas, October 10-15, 2004.

Co-located with Vis 2004, are two highly successful Symposia:

InfoVis 2004: IEEE Symposium on Information Visualization.

VolVis 2004: IEEE/SIGGRAPH Symposium on Volume Visualization and Graphics.

The combined symposia with Vis 2004 make this week in Austin the place to be to participate in this rapidly expanding field.

IEEE Visualization 2004 Presentor Information

We have finalized the contracts with the hotel, A/V, and equipment rental for the conference. We list below the conference-provided A/V, computer, networking, and power for each of the various venues.

To do immediately:

  1. Check the conference-provided A/V, computer, networking, and power for your venue to ensure that they meet your requirements. If they do not, contact Russ Taylor (taylorr@cs.unc.edu) or David Hickerson (david.a.hickerson@boeing.com) immediately to let us know so that we can attempt to locate additional equipment; plan to bring your own equipment unless you hear back from us before the conference.
  2. If you intend to bring equipment beyond a laptop to the conference, let Russ Taylor know (taylorr@cs.unc.edu) so that adequate power and networking can be provided.
  3. If you intend to bring special graphics cards or other hardware to install into a PC at the conference, let Russ Taylor know (taylorr@cs.unc.edu) so that he can attempt to locate a machine and let you know if you must bring your own. We cannot install anything on the rented presenter PCs.

Papers and Panels

A/V: Projector(s) have native 1280x1024 resolution, and can resample images that are up to 1600x1200 resolution; using standard 15-pin VGA connector. Amplified audio is provided through a standard stereo 1/8" mini plug. Standard-format DVD player (be sure to check the play of a burned DVD on this equipment to ensure compatibility). NTSC VHS/SVHS player. CXL Overhead

Equipment: Each session will have a 2GHz Pentium 4 desktop PC with 1GB RAM and an 80GB hard drive connected to the A/V system. There will not be graphics acceleration. The machines will have Windows XP Pro and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) installed, as well as OpenOffice, Quicktime, the Firefox web browser and Acrobat Reader. Identically-configured machines will be in the Speaker Preparation room. Both sets of machines will be equipped with CD-record drives to enable moving files onto and off of them.

Networking: There will be two wired Ethernet connections at each session, one for the presentation machine (static local IP address) and one for a laptop connection (DHCP). These connections will share the twin-T1 connection between the conference and the outside world with the rest of the conference traffic. There will be 100MBit connections between the speaker preparation machines, the file server, and the presentation machines. In addition, there will be wireless networking coverage for the sessions, including DHCP.

Power: There will be a single 5-amp circuit (enough to drive a PC and its monitor and a laptop) with three available outlets for each session.

Workshops

Special note for InfoVis Software Workshop on Saturday: There will be no network connection provided for this workshop. Network connections will begin on Sunday morning for sessions and on Sunday afternoon for email and wireless connectivity.

NTSC VHS/SVHS player

Equipment: No PC will be provided unless it is requested. If you want one, we can provide one identical to the one described under Papers; just let us know before the conference.
