IEEE Visualization 2004 Contest
The Visualization 2004 Contest was a new event in 2004 created to foster comparison of novel and established techniques, provide benchmarks for the community, and to create an exciting venue for discussion at the conference.
The contest was open to everyone (excluding the contest organizers and judges)—individuals or teams from academia, industry, or elsewhere. Students and student teams were highly encouraged to participate. Existing tools and research prototypes could have be used, and different tools can be combined where desired. The entries were judged upon the completeness of the solution (with regards to the given tasks) and the effectiveness of the solution. Partial answers focusing on a particular data set, aspect of a task, etc. were acceptable.
There were six entries to the contest. The winners for 2004 were:
- Helmut Doleisch, Philipp Muigg, and Helwig Hauser, VRVis, Austria
- Kenny Gruchalla and Jonathan Marbach, BP Center for Visualization, Universrity of Colorado, Bolder, USA
- Greg P. Johnson and Chris Burns, Texas Advanced Computing Center, University of Texas, Austin, USA
Theme and Data Sets
The theme for the first IEEE Visualization Contest was "Visualization Fusion." The data set for the contest exhibits many different types of behavior that can be tackled by various means; the goal is to combine multiple visualization techniques to effectively communicate this behavior; the data has been archives do additional comparison can be performed by other researchers and practitioners. More information about the tasks is also available.
